Users and Survivors of Psychiatry in Kenya (USPKenya) www.uspkenyan.com (board members on photo, left) was registered as an NGO in Kenya in 2007, with the main objective of advocating for the rights of users and survivors of psychiatry as well as providing mental health information. The organisation intends to engage and work with various stakeholders - the public, the government and private sector for better handling of mental health patients in Kenya and beyond as well as providing support to the the users. The group started with five users and survivors of psychiatry who met during the World Psychiatrists Association (WPA) regional congress held at Safaripark Hotel, Nairobi in March 2007, but other members have joined, including community based organizations (CBOs) made up of mentally ill persons and their carers.   The USPKenya offices are at Kangemi PCEA Church compound, a few metres from the Kangemi matatu terminus.

Susan Catherine Keter and Lilian Mude Pieltjes, both members of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry in Kenya (USPKenya), attended the 10th International Conference on Psychology, psychiatry and philosophy  www.ppp2007.co.za  which took place in Sun City South Africa from 26-30th August 2007. The theme of the conference was: "Hypotheses, Neuroscience and Real Persons". Susan Presented a Paper on Providing Holistic Therapy to mental Health Patients, while Lilian discussed the role of religion in healing. Both Susan and Lillian found the conference both rejuvenating and revealing.
